Lovren has missed the first four games of the new Premier League season through injury, which has allowed Gomez a consistent run in the side.
The 21-year-old has quickly forged a solid partnership at the back with Van Dijk as Liverpool have made a perfect start to the campaign, conceding just one goal.
Gomez and Van Dijk have been the standout performers for Jurgen Klopp’s men so far and the team finally looks solid enough to mount a genuine challenge for the title.
According to ex-Liverpool striker Bellamy, Lovren is not as good a defender as Gomez and when he plays it makes the team more vulnerable to shipping goals.
He told Sky Sports: “He [Dejan Lovren] was Liverpool’s weak link. That’s why I’m so impressed with Joe Gomez because the balance of the team is so much better with him and Virgil van Dijk.
“They’ve got pace and can defend one-v-one. And they’re going to have to at times because the midfield, alright they’ve got a bit more balance now with [Georginio] Wijnaldum, the job he’s done, Milner who is intelligent enough to see the danger.
“When they lost the ball, they were always vulnerable but with these two now at the back and also the likes of [James] Milner, [Jordan] Henderson who can step into there, they have pace and can defend one-v-one.”
Lovren is apparently close to a return to the fold with Liverpool but it is unlikely that supporters would be pleased for him to replace Gomez in the squad at this stage, mainly because it could disrupt the momentum the team has managed to gather in the opening month of the season.
