Garth Crooks has singled out Virgil van Dijk for special praise after his strong performance helped Liverpool FC to claim a 2-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

The Reds have made a solid start to the new campaign under Jurgen Klopp and they have won all five of their opening Premier League games.

Liverpool FC are currently joint top of the Premier League table along with Chelsea FC and they will be aiming to maintain a title challenge throughout the campaign.

They were in impressive form on Saturday as they claimed a 2-1 win over Spurs at Wembley.

Van Dijk put in a strong performance at the back as they managed to continue their 100 per cent start to the new season.

And Crooks felt that the Netherlands defender deserved special praise for his strong display for the Reds against the Lilywhites.

Writing in his column for BBC Sport, Crooks said: “Harry Kane never had a kick. Virgil van Dijk was too big, too strong and too composed on the ball.

“In times like these when centre-backs look imperious, strikers have to ruffle feathers and the England captain simply wasn’t prepared to have a scrap.

“If ever there was a day for Harry and the boys to get among it and stick their heads in the faces of Liverpool’s defenders then this was it.

“Instead, Van Dijk walked on to the pitch looking like a film star and walked off with the Oscar for best leading man.”

Liverpool FC will kick off their Champions League group stage campaign on Tuesday night when they host Paris Saint-Germain at Stamford Bridge.

The Reds are aiming to go one step further in Europe’s elite club competition this season after they finished as runners-up in the Champions League last term.
