Gomez has been a vital part of Jurgen Klopp’s team so far in the early stages of the 2018-19 Premier League campaign, already forging a solid partnership with Virgil Van Dijk in the heart of the defence.
Liverpool FC currently sit joint top of the table with Watford FC and Chelsea FC going into the international break after winning their opening four games, most recently picking up three points away to Leicester City.
Klopp’s men have only conceded one goal so far and that is in no small part down to the influence that Gomez has had on the team, impressing supporters and experts alike with his composure on the ball and fantastic reading of the game.
One such expert is ex-footballer Garth Crooks, who believes that the 21-year-old has had a huge impact at Liverpool since breaking into the first team.
He told BBC Sport: “If Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson were the ‘finds’ of last season then I would argue that Liverpool’s Joe Gomez must be the ‘find’ of this season.
“The player’s calmness in defence is matched only by his simplicity on the ball. The central defender refuses to complicate the game and that is what I find so adorable about his performances.”
Liverpool’s next game after a two-week break is away to Tottenham, which will surely provide them with their biggest test yet this year.
If they can leave Wembley with three points then it would confirm their credentials as genuine title contenders and send out an ominous message to the rest of the league.
