Jurgen Klopp has played down the significance of his decision to substitute Xherdan Shaqiri at half-time of Liverpool FC’s 3-0 win over Southampton on Saturday.

The Switzerland international has been getting used to life at Anfield after having signed for the Reds from Stoke City in the summer transfer window.

Shaqiri made his first Premier League start of the season for the Reds on Saturday and he played a part in the opening goal when his shot was deflected in in the first half.

However, Klopp opted to replace Shaqiri with James Milner at half-time, raising questions about how the Liverpool FC boss rated the attacker’s performance.

Speaking at his news conference after the game, Klopp was asked to explain his decision to substitute Shaqiri, and he replied: “It was not easy, to be honest.

“It’s my job to sometimes deliver news nobody wants to hear. That’s how it was at half-time but he is a fantastic boy.

“I explained it to him so it’s no problem. Usually I don’t explain substitutions at half-time but I thought it made sense.

“It’s just good to have him; the free-kick was outstanding. That’s good. The whole team was not used to what we did today.

“As a new player, usually you struggle most but he didn’t – he tried everything. The only problem was defensively.

“Offensively, it was a good idea but, how I said, we have to work on that more often. But he was good and I liked it.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool FC will turn to League Cup affairs and their home clash against Chelsea FC at Anfield on Wednesday night.

The Reds will then travel to Stamford Bridge to take on Maurizio Sarri’s men in the Premier League on Saturday evening in one of the first top-of-the-table clashes of the new season.

Liverpool FC have won all six of their opening Premier League games to leave them as one of the early pace-setters in the title race.
