Liverpool FC are joint top of the Premier League table after four games, having secured wins against West Ham, Crystal Palace, Brighton and Leicester City.
Last season the front three of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah took all the plaudits as Liverpool FC finished fourth and reached the Champions League final, but so far this year the defence has received all the praise.
Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez have quickly forged a solid partnership at the back which has been the foundation of the recent results for the club.
Van Dijk already had a sterling reputation as a defensive leader but Gomez has only recently broken into the starting XI at Anfield, which is why ex-Arsenal midfielder Merson has been so impressed by his performances.
He told Sky Sports: “Of course we all talk about Van Dijk, just how dominant he is and that a lot of their attacks are off the back of him winning that first contact.
“Gomez being alongside him; what a player for him to learn from. He’s raw, but has out-and-out pace.
“I’m so impressed with Gomez, the balance of the team is so much better now, with so much pace, they can defend one-versus-one, because at times they are going to have to.”
The 21-year-old’s displays have earned him a well-deserved call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the upcoming friendlies against Spain and Switzerland.
If he can continue to play at the high level he has shown at club level then England fans can look forward to welcoming a new star on the international stage and one that could help the Three Lions challenge for the European Championship trophy in two years time.
