Jurgen Klopp’s men are currently joint top of the Premier League table, after securing four consecutive wins at the start of the season.
Tottenham have made a similarly strong start, although they did lose their last fixture before the international break against Watford at Vicarage Road.
The two sides will meet at Wembley this weekend which promises to be an intriguing contest. The heavyweight clash could go some way to deciding who goes on to genuinely challenge for the league title and Spurs, in particular, cannot afford to drop any more points in pursuit of their rivals.
According to ex-Arsenal midfielder Merson, Liverpool have the necessary tools to win on Saturday, but he stopped short of backing them to dethrone Manchester City come May.
He told Sky Sports: “I fancy Liverpool based on the counter-attack game. This game is bigger for Tottenham than it is for Liverpool – this is a game Spurs can’t afford to lose, they’ve got to have a go especially after what happened at Watford.
“Liverpool will pick them off. If you want to win Premier League titles then you have to win these games, so Liverpool will be judged on this too.
“I think they’ll win this one but toppling Manchester City for the title will be so difficult.”
Spurs finished third in the league last season, just in front of Liverpool who also managed to reach the Champions League final.
Both sides are clearly making great strides forward but it is high time that they started adding more silverware to their respective trophy cabinets.
Whatever the final result on Saturday, the long-term battle for supremacy in England has begun in the wake of Man City’s recent dominance and both clubs will be hopeful of disrupting their momentum in the coming months.
