Manchester United and Arsenal are both keen on signing Hertha Berlin midfielder Arne Maier, according to reports in the German media.
German newspaper Sport Bild, as quoted by The Sun, is reporting that the English clubs have been keeping a close eye on the 19-year-old midfielder as the January transfer window approaches.
The same report says that the two Premier League clubs could be about to go head-to-head to try and sign the defensive midfielder after his recent impressive performances for Hertha Berlin.
Hertha are said to be well aware of his potential and they tied him down to a new contract until 2022 back in February.
Maier has been in solid form of late and he recently made his debut for Germany U21s and came off the bench in this month’s clashes against Mexico and Ireland.
The teenager has started three Bundesliga games for Hertha Berlin this season and it appears that his solid recent displays have not gone unnoticed.
Both Arsenal and Manchester United are likely to want to bolster their squads in the January transfer window as the race for the Premier League top four spots hots up in the second half of the campaign.
Jose Mourinho has been tasked with steering the Red Devils towards a Premier League title challenge, while Arsenal are aiming to at least break back into the top four this season.
