Jose Mourinho highlights positives after Man United’s League Cup loss to Derby
The Manchester United boss is pleased with certain aspects of his team's performance despite a loss to Derby County on penalties
Jose Mourinho believes Manchester United can take encouragment from their League Cup performance despite an 8-7 penalty shootout loss to Derby County in the third round at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils were looking to bounce back from a 1-1 draw with promoted side Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford last weekend to lose more ground on title rivals Liverpool FC and Manchester City.
The Manchester United manager welcomed his former Chelsea FC vice captain Frank Lampard and his Derby side to Old Trafford in the League Cup third round at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
Juan Mata broke the deadlock in the third minute before on-loan Liverpool FC star Harry Wilson equalised before Jack Marriott’s header gave the Rams an unlikely lead.
Belgian international Marouane Fellaini netted an equaliser in the fifth minute of added time for 10-man Manchester United after Sergio Romero’s sending off.
Derby secured an 8-7 win against Manchester United in the penalty shootout to heap more pressure on Mourinho.
Speaking at his post-match media conference at Old Trafford following their surprise loss, Mourinho said:
“We are playing against good teams with good young players, with speed, with intensity; they give great intensity to the game.
“They wanted to press, they pressed for every goal and we need to respect, we need to match that mentality. I’m obviously sad with going out, but we didn’t lose the match, which I think is important for us and the penalty shootout is always what we know.”
Manchester United won the League Cup in Mourinho’s first season in charge following a 3-2 victory over Southampton.
The Red Devils are in seventh spot in the Premier League table.
