Rio Ferdinand hailed David De Gea as the best goalkeeper in the world following Manchester United’s 2-1 win at Watford on Saturday evening.

The Spain international endured a disappointing World Cup in Russia after he made a number of high profile mistakes in the major tournament.

Manchester United have made a slow start to the new Premier League campaign following losses to Brighton and Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur.

The Red Devils have won successive Premier League fixture for the first time this season thanks to goals from Romelu Lukaku and Chris Smalling.

De Gea made four saves during the 2-1 win over Watford at Vicarage Road to ensure the Red Devils moved up to eighth place in the Premier League table.

The Manchester United number one has been the division’s standout goalkeeper over the past five seasons or so.

However, the Red Devils’ title rivals have all strengthened their options in goal over the past 24 months.

Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand sent a message to De Gea following their 2-1 win at Watford.

Ferdinand wrote on Twitter: “The Best @D_DeGea ❤️”

Liverpool FC signed Alisson Becker in a £67m deal from AS Roma in August before Chelsea FC made Kepa Arrizabalaga the world’s most expensive goalkeeper in a £73m deal.
