The Red Devils were looking to return to winning ways following a 1-1 draw with promoted side Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League at the weekend.
Manchester United are in eighth place in the Premier League table but the League Cup provided the Red Devils with a chance to restore some feel good factor.
The 20-time English champions made the breakthrough in the third minute through Juan Mata before Derby turned the third round tie on its head through Harry Wilson and Jack Marriott.
However, Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini levelled in the fifth minute of added time before Manchester United lost 8-7 to Frank Lampard’s Derby outfit on Tuesday night.
Speaking at his post-match media conference about his team talk with Manchester United leading 1-0, Wright said:
“My words at half-time were similar to the words against Wolves where I told the players that the result was open and we needed to close it, but again we concede one goal. I don’t think it was a free-kick at all but the kid hit a fantastic shot. But then we had an immediate reaction. We hit the post, we created more chances, but then comes the red card and then you are in more trouble.”
Manchester United have lost three of their opening eight games in all competitions this season.
The Red Devils have lost to Brighton and Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League this term to lose ground on current leaders Liverpool FC.
Jose Mourinho’s side will make the difficult trip to West Ham United at the London Stadium on Saturday evening.
