The France international returned to Manchester United in a club record £89m deal from Serie A giants Juventus in 2106.
Pogba helped the Red Devils to win the Europa League and the League Cup in his first season back at Old Trafford.
The 25-year-old struggled during his second season to prompt criticism from his manager to fuel speculation about his future.
Pogba was linked with a potential move in the summer after the versatile midfielder won the World Cup with France.
The World Cup winner has made an impressive start to the current campaign despite the uncertainty around his long term future.
The former Juventus star scored twice in a 3-0 win against Young Boys in the Champions League in Switzerland on Wednesday night.
Ex-Irish defender Cunningham believes Mourinho should build the team around Pogba moving forward.
“There was big talk from Mourinho before the game,” Cunningham told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“He wasn’t perfect but generally speaking for a young boy at this level, he’s been good.”
Manchester United signed Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred, FC Porto defender Diogo Dalot and Stoke goalkeeper Lee Grant in the summer.
The Red Devils finished in second spot in the Premier League table last term, having been eliminated in the Champions League round of 16.
