The France international was critical of Manchester United’s tactics following a 1-1 draw with promoted side Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford last weekend.
Pogba was stripped of his vice captaincy ahead of the Red Devils’ 8-7 loss to Championship side Derby County in the League Cup third round on Tuesday night.
The deteriorating relationship between Mourinho and Pogba has been a talking point throughout most of the calendar year so far.
Pogba was linked with a potential move to La Liga champions FC Barcelona in the summer but Manchester United rejected an approach from the Spanish side.
Former Chelsea FC defender Burley believes Manchester United manager Mourinho was right to demote Pogba following the club record signing’s comments at the weekend.
“Whether you like Mourinho or not, Pogba has hardly been absolutely wonderful for Manchester United since joining,” Burley told ESPN FC.
“But you can’t have, as a manager, a guy out undermining you like that and getting away with it.
“So I think it’s understandable.
“If someone is criticising your tactics, you’re not just going to sit there and take it.
“I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, there are too many at Manchester United prepared to hide behind the flak that Jose Mourinho is taking for his style of play.
“I’m not saying Mourinho is innocent, he’s clearly not, but there are too many players hiding.”
Pogba moved to Manchester United in an £89m deal from Serie A giants Juventus in the 2016 summer transfer window.
The France star is Mourinho’s most expensive signing since taking over the reins from Louis van Gaal in May 2016.
The Red Devils are in seventh place in the Premier League table following their stalemate with Wolves at the weekend.
