Martial has produced a few memorable moments in a United shirt, but more often than not he is a dejected, stuttering figure on the pitch.
Allardyce has criticised Martial for his lack of improvement and suggested José Mourinho and Louis van Gaal struggled to find Martial his place in the team.
He said on talkSPORT: “We’ve seen the odd flash of his brilliance, but by now he should be showing that brilliance on a more regular basis.
“He should be hitting top form more often than not.
“He’s had two managers now and both managers have found it difficult to find him a regular place in the Man United side.”
Martial left Monaco to join United on transfer deadline day in 2015 for a reported £54m.
The striker has often found himself deployed on the wings since United signed Romelu Lukaku and Zlatan Ibrahimović to play as central strikers in recent seasons.
He is perhaps a victim of his own success after a brilliant solo-goal on his debut against Liverpool saw him beat multiple defenders at will cutting in from the left.
He has scored 36 goals in 137 appearances for the Red Devils which is less than United expected of him when they took a calculated risk on signing him.
Allardyce has cited the fact that Martial often finds himself playing on the wings as a reason for this relatively meagre goal return, but said Martial has never hit the heights required to warrant being moved to the central striker position.
