The Red Devils made it two wins in a row in the Premier League for the first time this season as they claimed all three points at Vicarage Road.
Jose Mourinho had found himself under intense pressure at Old Trafford this season as the Red Devils lost back to back games against both Brighton and Tottenham.
However, Manchester United got their Premier League title bid back on track by claiming the three points at Watford to leave them with nine points from their first five games.
Smalling netted one of Manchester United’s goals against the Hornets, and Crooks was particularly impressed by the English defender’s performance.
Writing in his column for BBC Sport, Crooks said: “We’ve all been looking for cracks in Jose Mourinho and his players since his outbursts and the defeat against Tottenham.
“To my surprise I have seen nothing but total commitment. Credit where credit’s due, United’s players have come out fighting and look meaner than ever.
“Chris Smalling, with his new ‘natty dread’ hair style, was outstanding against Watford.
“The new look oozes swagger and if his goal was anything to go by, the defender’s hairstyle may have something to do with it. Amazing what a new look can do.”
Manchester United will now switch their attentions back towards Champions League affairs and their home clash against Young Boys in the group stage on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils are under pressure to win some silverware this season after they ended up in second place and without a trophy in what was Mourinho’s second campaign in charge at Old Trafford.
They haven’t won the Premier League since their final triumph under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.
