Jamie Carragher has said he wants to see Marcus Rashford playing in a central striking role at Manchester United.

Since Jose Mourinho joined the club in 2016, Rashford has almost exclusively been deployed on the wings.

However, Carragher wants Rashford to emulate the successes up-front of former England internationals Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney.

“I’d love nothing more, as I’m sure Rashford and United fans would, of him being the main man through the centre for Manchester United in the future,” he said on talkSPORT.

“There have been others; Michael Owen and [Robbie] Fowler at Liverpool, but they were teenage sensations… Rooney joining United at 18.

“We thought Rashford may have been that, but it hasn’t quite happened, so we still don’t know if he’s good enough to be Manchester United’s centre-forward.

“But I don’t think we’ll ever know if he doesn’t play in that position, and I don’t see him playing in that position any time soon.”

Rashford took English football by storm by scoring a brace on both his United debut against FC Midtjylland in the Europa League, and on his Premier League debut against Arsenal.

After his first season, he looked to be the next big thing for England and Manchester United, but when Mourinho moved to Old Trafford he brought in Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Rashford found himself behind Ibrahimovic in the pecking order to start up-front, and matters were made worse when Mourinho bought Romelu Lukaku at the beginning of his second season as United boss.

Despite increasing his goal tally for United season by season, Rashford has often looked a lonely figure deployed on United’s wings.

He has scored 32 times in 132 appearances for United, and Carragher believes adding to that tally will be a tough task as he thinks Rashford will not be a central striker at Old Trafford as long as Mourinho is in charge.
