Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has backed Jose Mourinho to continue in his role as manager of Manchester United, amid criticism of the team’s recent displays.

Brighton and Tottenham have already managed to beat Man United this season, which has left the team six points behind the pacesetters in the early Premier League standings.

Either side of those defeats Mourinho’s men managed to pick up wins against Leicester City and Burnley, but there is a growing sense that the current crop of players are not up to the task of genuinely challenging for the league title.

Despite the team’s poor run of results, ex-Man United right-back Neville does not believe that Mourinho should be axed, citing his experience at the highest level as the reason for supporters to be loyal and patient.

According to The Times, he told reporters on Thursday: “I think Jose is a brilliant manager and, in a 25-year career, young managers will emerge, people will ask questions if you aren’t successful.

“He’s having a more difficult time, but finished? I genuinely think that’s a nonsense.”

Mourinho is a two-time Champions League winner and has won domestic titles in Spain, Italy and Portugal, but his most successful spell in management was arguably at Stamford Bridge with Chelsea.

The 55-year-old won three Premier League titles with Chelsea, two of which came in his first spell at the club when he was at the peak of his powers.

The Portuguese tactician oozed charisma and endeared himself to the press with his unique personality and winning mentality, which produced great results on the pitch.

Unfortunately for Man United fans, he seems a million miles away from the figure he was back then and unless he can completely change his demeanour and start to turn things around quickly, he might soon find himself walking out of the exit door at Old Trafford.
