Rashford has frequently featured on the wings under Mourinho, rather than his preferred position as central striker.
Thompson has suggested this is due to a lack of trust in Rashford from Mourinho and not because United are simply oversubscribed up top.
He told Sky Sports News: “He has to analyse his game time this year but when you look at a manager to player relationship, I don’t think there is total trust from the manager of whether he’s a centre-forward, a left-sided player or a right-sided one.
“The big question will come down to Marcus.
“Not in January but next summer big questions will have to be asked.”
Despite playing out of position since Mourinho joined, Rashford’s goal return has been on the rise since his debut.
He scored eight goals in his first season, 11 in his second and 13 last season; his third season.
He is yet to score this season for United but notched twice over the international break for England.
Thompson’s suggestion implies this will not matter much to Mourinho who Thompson alleges does not believe Rashford fits anywhere in his system.
Much has been made of Mourinho’s future at United after a turbulent summer with the administrators at United as well as the press.
Fellow out-of-favour striker, Anthony Martial, recently signed a new five-year contract at United and there was speculation suggesting Martial hoped to outlast Mourinho at Old Trafford.
Rashford could try and do the same after United’s sloppy start to the season seems to foretell Mourinho not lasting more than three seasons in a managerial role yet again.
