Peter Schmeichel is convinced that Jose Mourinho is capable of leading Manchester United to the Premier League title this season, as long as he is given time and patience.

The Red Devils boss has found himself under intense scrutiny in recent weeks following Manchester United’s patchy start to the new top flight campaign.

Manchester United have only won two of their opening four Premier League games this season to leave them already six points off the pace in the race for the title.

Mourinho has cut a frustrated figure at Old Trafford of late and he walked out of a news conference following the Red Devils’ 3-0 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford earlier this month.

However, former Red Devils goalkeeper Schmeichel feels that Mourinho is more than capable of winning the title at Old Trafford as long as he is given the time to do so.

Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, Schmeichel said: “He’s been at great clubs.

“Real Madrid, Inter Milan. He won the Champions League with Porto. Three Premier League titles with Chelsea.

“He’s done so many great things in football. But Manchester United is a different level to anything. The scrutiny, the traditions and the history that we have. ‘This is in the equation every day. Every single day, we respect our history. We have very proud traditions.

“We finished runners-up last season from fifth the campaign before. We’re straight into the Champions League this year, we won the Europa League and we’ve been in two FA Cup finals.

“This is great. Yes we strive for more, but these are very positive things. ‘When we give him time and patience, when we understand this is a period in which we have to develop, we can win the Premier League.”

Manchester United will look to make it back to back wins in the Premier League for the first time this season when they take on Watford away from home after the international break.

The Red Devils have not won the title since 2013.
