Paul Merson launches attack on Man United star Paul Pogba
Paul Merson accuses Paul Pogba of failing to deliver on the pitch for Manchester United
Paul Merson has accused Paul Pogba of failing to deliver on the pitch for Manchester United since his return to the club.
The French midfielder returned to Manchester United from Juventus in a big-money transfer deal back in the summer of 2016 but most Red Devils fans would agree that he is yet to hit top form for the club.
Pogba’s situation at Manchester United has been a constant source of debate in recent days amid suggestions that he is keen on a move away from Old Trafford.
Pogba and manager Jose Mourinho were pictured having a frosty-looking exchange in Manchester United training last week as the midfielder’s situation continues to be a source of speculation.
However, Merson believes that it is time for Pogba to start delivering for the Red Devils on a consistent basis, and he says that he has not been impressed by what he has seen from the World Cup winner so far.
Speaking to the Daily Star, Merson said: “I don’t think he’s improved at all since he joined United. Even Michael Carrick used to dominate games from midfield more often than he does.
“I would like to think it’s not immaturity. He’s not young any more (25) and has played a lot of big matches.
“But what is his position? Does he have the discipline to be a central midfielder? Can he do that consistently? Can you trust him with a free role?
“It’s not easy at United because they’re not playing free-fl owing, attacking football. But he would have known that before he signed.
“You can’t keep saying it’s all the manager’s fault they’re not getting the best out of him.
“Sometimes you have to look at the player. When a manager digs him out, how does he respond?
“Too many players these days are paid so much money they sulk – or try to undermine the manager and get him sacked.”
Pogba will be expecting to start for Manchester United when the Red Devils take on Valencia in the Champions League group stage on Tuesday night at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils are aiming to challenge for the title this season after having finished second and without a trophy last term.
