Graeme Souness criticises Paul Pobga’s attitude at Man United
Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness criticised Paul Pogba before Man United's win against Burnley
Graeme Souness condemned Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba’s attitude ahead of the Red Devils’ 2-0 win away to Burnley.
A Romelu Lukaku brace ensured that Man United returned to winning ways on Sunday after a difficult couple of weeks for the club.
Jose Mourinho’s men suffered successive defeats against Brighton and Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur respectively, which saw the team fall six points off the pace in the early stages of the new Premier League season.
France’s World Cup-winning star Paul Pogba is one of several players to come under intense scrutiny in the wake of recent results and Souness criticised the midfielder post-match on Sunday.
He told the Sunday Times before the win at Burnley: “Paul Pogba plays for himself, it’s all about how cool he looks, showing us how clever he is.
“I reckon Pogba’s only in the team to maintain his transfer value until United can sell him, because he doesn’t merit his place for any other reason. Perhaps we’re now seeing the selfish player Fergie didn’t fancy the first time round?”
The former Liverpool midfielder’s comments are certainly harsh but considering the amount of money the club forked out to bring Pogba back to Old Trafford two years ago, supporters have a right to expect more from him.
At his best, he is one of the finest midfielders in world football but his Man United career has been dogged by inconsistency so far.
With a tough game against Watford at Vicarage Road next up for Mourinho’s men, it is vital that Pogba shows the best of himself in order for the team to return to Manchester with another much needed three points.
