Phil Thompson has suggested that Marcus Rashford may have to leave Manchester United next summer to find first-team opportunities.

Rashford start his career at United as a central striker but since Jose Mourinho took over as manager, he has found himself playing on the wings.

Thompson suggested that Mourinho does not trust Rashford to be his starting number nine and he may have to look elsewhere if he is to maximise his potential.

“Rashford is a very talented boy,” he said on Sky Sports News.

“Is he going to fit in at Manchester United? I don’t think so.

“I don’t think there is trust from the manager to the player that he can do it on a regular basis.

“That is why he is only coming into the team now and again.

“He is only 20 years old and he probably needs a little more time, but I think this season is a big season for him.

“Come the end of the season he then has to make the decision.

“He’s got to start playing regularly.”

Rashford is experiencing a resurgence in form after scoring both of England’s goals during the international break.

First of all, he netted against Spain in last Saturday’s UEFA Nations League opener defeat, and then again in Tuesday’s narrow 1-0 victory over Switzerland.

He has now scored five goals in his 27 appearances for his country and will return to United’s Carrington training ground with renewed confidence.

However, with history as a guide, this will not matter much to Mourinho; his strict tactical system simply does not allow a player like Rashford to play up-front.

Romelu Lukaku tends to start for Mourinho up-front on his own as the Belgian’s ability to occupy two defenders plays a big part in Mourinho’s system.

Rashford does not fit this mould, and if Mourinho lasts the season, Rashford may have to heed Thompson’s advice to find regular playing time.
