Manchester United are ready to challenge Manchester City for the signature of Ruben Neves in January, according to reports in the British media.

Metro is reporting that the Red Devils are keen on a move to try and sign the 21-year-old from Wolves and they are prepared to go head to head with their bitter local rivals in order to secure his signature.

The same story says that Jose Mourinho is a long-term admirer of Neves, but it is also being claimed that Manchester City could make a move to try and sign him in January after they missed out on Jorginho in the summer.

The Red Devils boss was waiting to see how Neves adapted to his first season in the Premier League, but a move could now be accelerated to January.

The article claims that Manchester United are prepared to “counter” any bid from Manchester City in the January transfer window.

According to the same story, Pep Guardiola is keen to sign a long-term replacement for Fernandinho, and Neves could be the man to step in.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are set to take on Watford away from home in the Premier League after the international break.
