Paul Merson has ruled out Manchester United winning the Premier League title this season.

The Red Devils haven’t won the Premier League crown since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson was still in charge.

David Moyes and Louis van Gaal both struggled to rebuild Manchester United to prompt their premature dismissals.

Jose Mourinho took over the reins of the Red Devils in May 2016 and won the Europa League and League Cup in his first season.

While Manchester United finished in the runners-up spot last term, Mourinho’s side didn’t win silverware in their second campaign.

Manchester United missed out on some key signings in the summer and appear to have lost ground on their title rivals.

The Red Devils have already lost to Brighton and Tottenham Hotspur this season to fall off the pace.

Former Arsenal playmaker Merson doesn’t believe Manchester United have what it takes to challenge Liverpool FC and Manchester City.

“No chance,” Merson told Sky Sports when asked about Manchester United’s title hopes. “Too far behind. That’s too many [points].”

The Red Devils lost to Championship side Derby County on penalties in the League Cup third round on Tuesday night.

Mourinho stripped Paul Pogba of the vice captaincy in the lead up to the League Cup clash.
