Jose Mourinho explains why Man United signing won’t start v Wolves
The Manchester United manager rules out Diogo Dalot starting against Wolves on Saturday
Jose Mourinho has ruled out Diogo Dalot starting Manchester United’s clash against Wolves on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils signed the Portuguese defender in a £17m deal from FC Porto in the 2018 summer transfer window.
Mourinho opted to rest Ecuador international Antonio Valencia for their Champions League opener on Young Boy’s plastic pitch given the 32-year-old’s record of injury problems.
Dalot was handed his first start for Manchester United and the 19-year-old acquitted himself well in a 3-0 victory over the Swiss side on Wednesday night.
The Portuguese teenager earned praise of his performance after the versatile defender started just his ninth senior game in his professional career so far.
Manchester United will welcome promoted side Wolves at Old Trafford this weekend in search of a third successive Premier League victory.
However, Mourinho is planning to rest Dalot before handing the right-back his second start against Derby County in the League Cup on Tuesday night.
“I want him, in this process of adaptation, I want him to be totally fresh,” Mourinho told his pre-match media conference.
“To play for Manchester United is difficult enough. For a kid of 19 coming from another country and after an important injury I think it’s difficult enough – he doesn’t need to face more difficulties because of an accumulation of matches.”
Manchester United finished in second place in the Premier League table last season to secure their best finish since the Sir Alex Ferguson era.
The Red Devils also signed Shakthar Donetsk midfielder Fred and Stoke City goalkeeper Lee Grant in the summer transfer window.
