Ex-Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley insists he only wants to see Paul Pogba playing at his maximum potential at Manchester United, amid transfer speculation.

Pogba has started all four of Manchester United’s games at the start of the new Premier League season, scoring two goals from the penalty spot.

The Frenchman captained the team in the opening two games against Leicester City and Brighton, impressing against the former but massively underperforming against the latter.

Two more underwhelming displays followed against Tottenham and Burnley, as Jose Mourinho’s men find already themselves six points behind the early leaders Chelsea, Watford and Liverpool.

The 25-year-old became a World Cup winner with France over the summer, playing a starring role for his country throughout the tournament, but he has so far been unable to produce the same level of performances at club level.

Barcelona have been heavily linked with Pogba over the last few months and Burley, who now works as a pundit, believes that the Man United midfielder has to start focusing on his duties at Old Trafford.

He told ESPN FC on Tuesday: “I just want to see Pogba playing and playing well for Manchester United and showing us what he’s all about, driving United forward, getting the goals, really being the backbone of that team.

“I’m fed up of ‘happy’ or ‘not happy’ and contracts and what not. The transfer window doesn’t open until January, it’s unlikely that top players leave in January and he is a top player.

“So we are probably looking at the summer if he is going to leave, or indeed if Mourinho leaves in the summer and the situation may resolve itself.”

Manchester United face another tough examination this Saturday against Watford at Vicarage Road, which is a must-win game if the club is to remain in touch with the early league leaders.

Supporters will be hoping that Pogba finally rises to the occasion to help the team secure back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
