Watford have steamrollered their way to the top of the Premier League table at the start of the new Premier League campaign, securing wins against Brighton, Burnley, Crystal Palace and Tottenham.
Against Spurs in particular, Javi Garcia’s men displayed their impressive physicality and will to win over the 90 minutes, which holds them in good stead for the rest of the year.
How long they will maintain their run is anyone’s guess, but Man United represent arguably their toughest challenge to date, despite having been beaten by Tottenham in August.
Jose Mourinho’s men got back to winning ways with a 2-0 win against Burnley before the international break and they will travel to Vicarage Road desperate for another three points to climb up the table.
Merson insists that Man United will be able to match Watford in a physical contest, to secure back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
He told Sky Sports on Thursday: “Watford have been outstanding but United will be able to match their physicality. They can look after themselves. Away win.”
Man United will surely go into the match as favourites but supporters will be wary of avoiding another embarrassing away defeat like they suffered against Brighton last month.
Many of Mourinho’s star players failed to turn up for that game as Brighton overpowered them in midfield to secure a famous victory.
All the pressure is on Man United this weekend but it would not be surprising if they finally click into gear and start showing the kind of form that earned them a second place finish last term.
