Unai Emery admits he was disappointed Arsenal lost ground on their title rivals ahead of their clash against Liverpool FC next weekend.

The Gunners won seven successive Premier League games to hoist themselves into the top four despite a difficult start to the Premier League season.

Arsenal lost 2-0 to defending Premier League champions Manchester City in their season opener at The Emirates before the Gunners suffered a 3-2 defeat by Chelsea FC at Stamford Bridge.

Emery was under pressure following the opening two games after the Spanish head coach replaced Arsene Wenger in the summer after a sixth-placed finish last term.

However, the north London side went on a seven-game winning run, including a 5-1 away win at Fulham before a 3-1 home victory over Leicester City either side of the international break.

Arsenal were held to a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park at the weekend to maintain their unbeaten run but lose ground on the table toppers.

The Gunners will host Jurgen Klopp’s side at The Emirates next Saturday as Emery’s side face their first big test since successive losses to Manchester City and Chelsea FC.

Speaking at his post-match media conference following Arsenal’s 2-2 stalemate with Palace, Emery replied when asked if he was disappointed to lose ground in the title race.

“A little bit. I think we are in our process, in our way, and I think we are in a good position now, for continuing our objective.

“It’s difficult away and I think the team can improve. I think today, the draw was not bad. We want to win but it’s not easy. We look at today and they are a good team.

“Playing here is not easy for every team, but our challenge is to continue our process of learning in every match. It’s about learning the defensive situations and improving.”

Arsenal are in fourth place in the Premier League table and four points adrift of Liverpool FC but can close that gap to a point next weekend if Emery’s side beat the Merseyside outfit.

The Gunners can take heart from Emery’s record against Liverpool FC after the Spanish head coach masterminded Sevilla’s 3-1 win over Klopp’s men in the Europa League final in Basel in 2016.

The north London side won 11 games on the spin in all competitions before Palace pegged back Arsenal at Selhurst Park.
