Liverpool FC have conceded just three times this season and sit joint-top of the Premier League with Manchester City who have a better goal difference.
Keown has suggested the duo are the best performing in Europe at the moment, and could go on to be one of the best ever seen on Merseyside.
“You look at Liverpool at the start of the season, I said privately it could be one of the all-time great partnerships,” Keown told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“They just purr across the pitch. The gel together. Their mentality and their composure.
“Van Dijk is in charge of that partnership. I can’t think of a better one in Europe.”
Gomez’s early Liverpool FC career was blighted by injury, until last season where he appeared 31 times in red.
After injuries to Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip, Gomez found himself starting alongside van Dijk at the start of the season.
Such was the quality of the performances, that no doubts linger over whether this was the partnership Liverpool FC should use going forward.
After finishing 25 points behind last year’s champions Manchester City, being level on points with the Cityzens after seven games represents a remarkable turnaround.
Having the top-scorer in the Premier League last year highlights this gap the most, as they were still nowhere close to City.
The priority in the summer was simple; upgrade the defence – leading to the signing of play-making goalkeeper Alisson Becker from Roma.
After van Dijk moved in January £75m however, Jurgen Klopp opted to promote from within, and Gomez and van Dijk are repaying his faith in droves.
