Mark Lawrenson is backing Liverpool FC and Manchester City to play out a draw in their top of the table clash at Anfield on Sunday evening.

The Reds will welcome the defending Premier League champions to Merseyside in pursuit of their fourth successive win over Pep Guardiola’s men.

Liverpool FC, though, have failed to win their last three games in all competitions to falter after an impressive start to the current campaign.

Chelsea FC were 2-1 winners against Klopp’s side at Anfield in the Carabao Cup third round last month after Eden Hazard netted a sensational winner in the final five minutes.

The Belgium international was on the score sheet days later to break the deadlock for Chelsea FC but Liverpool FC rescued a point in a 1-1 draw thanks to Daniel Sturridge’s brilliant equaliser.

Liverpool FC looked to be on course of a valuable point in Naples in the Champions League on Wednesday night before Lorenzo Insigne netted a 90th-minute winner to seal a 1-0 win for Napoli.

Manchester City, like Liverpool FC, have collected 19 points from their opening seven Premier League games, with the only blotch on their record a 1-1 draw with promoted side Wolves at Molineaux.

Former Liverpool FC defender Lawrenson believes Manchester City will leave Anfield with a point after tipping a 1-1 draw for Sunday’s title clash.

“Manchester City were so dominant last season because they had long spells where they were near their peak,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.

“In contrast, I don’t think either of these teams are playing near their best level yet.

“But from my memory of winning the league myself with Liverpool, that does not matter – you just try to win games, regardless of how well you are playing.

“And both teams just seem to keep on doing that. They are still getting results in the Premier League despite their players not really hitting their stride individually or collectively.

“People are seeing City and Liverpool both being in quite average form as being a negative issue but, if you look at it another way, then they are both near the top of the table and they haven’t even started playing the way they can.”

Liverpool FC slumped to a humiliating 5-0 loss to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium back in September 2017, although Sadio Mane’s first-half sending off undoubtedly played a part in the size of the scoreline.

However, the Reds exacted their revenge with a 4-3 win over the Citizens to end their unbeaten start to the Premier League season back in January.

Liverpool FC followed up their success in the Premier League with an aggregate victory over Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-finals last term – the Reds were 3-0 winners in the first leg at Anfield before a 2-1 comeback victory over Guardiola’s side in the return leg.

The Reds haven’t lost to Manchester City in the Premier League at Anfield since former Liverpool FC striker Nicolas Anelka came back to haunt his ex-manager Gerard Houllier’s decision not to sign the France international on a permanent deal.

Anelka sealed a famous win with an added time winner in a 2-1 win back in 2003.
