Manchester United

David De Gea: The Manchester United number one had little to do in the first half. 6/10

Antonio Valencia: The Manchester United captain didn’t have one of his best Champions League nights in a Red Devils shirt. 5

Chris Smalling: While the cumbersome defender made some important clearances, the former Fulham centre-half was poor in possession. 5

Eric Bailly: Recalled to the Manchester United line up, Bailly clashed with Rodrigo midway through the first half. The Ivory Coast international initially struggled to recover from the encounter before Bailly went on to produce a composed performance. 6

Luke Shaw: The Manchester United defender produced a solid performance at the back. Shaw was creative when the left-back pushed forward to support Rashford. Picked out Lukaku free in the penalty area in the 87th minute after Rashford was taken off set-piece duty. 7

Marouane Fellaini: Started alongside Matic and Pogba in midfield. His contribution was minimal aside from a brace of important headers. He scuffed a late shot on goal. 6

Nemanja Matic: The Serbian star did a good job in front of the Manchester United defence. 6

Paul Pogba: The World Cup winner showed some glimpses of magic. The club record signing had one shot on goal but Valencia goalkeeper Neto saved easily. 6

Alexis Sanchez: The Chile international drove a powerful free-kick into the wall in the first half. Jose Mourinho will be pleased to see Sanchez tracking back to help out his captain Valencia. Going forward, the South American struggled badly and Sanchez looks a shadow of the player who thrilled Arsenal supporters. 4

Marcus Rashford: Talk of Mourinho losing the dressing room doesn’t appear to have affected Rashford. The England international was lively in the first half. His direct approach was a welcome change for the stodgy performance of his team-mates. Rashford came close in the second half but Geoffrey Kondogbia denied the Manchester United number 10. His set-piece delivery was poor aside from a free-kick in the 85th minute that clipped the crossbar. 7

Romelu Lukaku: The Belgian striker was extremely quiet in the first half. He was exerted his influence after the break but couldn’t find a way past Neto. The 25-year-old tested Neto in the 71st minute with a powerful shot but the Valencia goalkeeper pushed the ball away from danger. Neto made himself big to deny Lukaku at close range with 16 minutes to go. Couldn’t keep a late attempt on target despite having a free header. 6

Substitutions

Anthony Martial: He won a free-kick on the edge of the area after a dangerous run. 5

Man of the match: Marcus Rashford – Mourinho will be pleased with performances of both Rashford and Shaw on the left wing. The pair provided Manchester United’s biggest threat. Rashford showed a willingness to run with the ball and try to create a decisive moment.
