Graeme Souness: Anthony Martial can be ‘full package’ at Man United

Graeme Souness believes Anthony Martial is the “full package” at Manchester United when the French star is in the right mindset.

The France international has been Manchester United’s best player over the past month to help Jose Mourinho’s men to collect seven points from their last three Premier League games.

Martial has found his first-team opportunities limited since the arrival of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez over the past 12 months at the 20-time English champions.

The 22-year-old scored in Manchester United’s thrilling 3-2 comeback win over Newcastle United at Old Trafford before the international break to net for the second time in the league this term.

Martial scored a quick-fire double to cancel out Antonio Rudiger’s opener against Chelsea FC at Stamford Bridge before Ross Barkley’s late equaliser denied the France star the title of match winner after a 2-2 draw.

The former AS Monaco forward continued his goal-scoring run with the second goal in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Everton at Old Trafford after Martial won the penalty for Paul Pogba’s opener.

Martial has been criticised over the past three and a half seasons due to his inconsistent performances, with off field distractions perhaps contributing to his patchy form.

However, former Liverpool FC captain Souness believes Martial has the talent to become a key player at Manchester United if the France star is in the zone.

“I think he’s a very special player,” Souness told Sky Sports on Sunday.

“I’ve always believed it. He’s got pace, power, super technique, as we’ve seen in the last couple of weeks with his goals. He’s the full package if he’s right.”

Martial moved to Manchester United in a £36m deal from Ligue 1 side Lyon in the 2015 summer transfer window to become the most expensive teenager in the world.

However, he lost that title to Kylian Mbappe after the France striker completed a £160m switch to Paris Saint-Germain from AS Monaco in 2017.

The Manchester United forward has won the Europa League, the League Cup and the FA Cup during his stint at Old Trafford.
