Gary Neville admits Anthony Martial isn’t ready to fire Manchester United to the title this term, but the club legend is adamant that the France star could score 25 goals a season in future campaigns.

The 22-year-old has been one of Manchester United’s most consistent players in an otherwise difficult start to the Premier League campaign for Jose Mourinho’s side.

Martial has scored in his last three Premier League games to earn a regular starting spot in Mourinho’s team, having previously been out of favour under the Portuguese head coach.

The France international won a first-half penalty which resulted in Paul Pogba’s opening goal on Sunday afternoon after the World Cup winner netted the rebound after his spot-kick was initially saved.

Martial doubled the home side’s lead with a curling finish in the second half to help Manchester United secure three points in a 2-1 win against Everton and extend their unbeaten run three Premier League games.

The Manchester United number 11 was linked with a potential move in the 2018 summer transfer window after struggling to hold down a regular place in Mourinho’s team.

However, Martial appears to have been given a new lease of life at the 20-time English champions this season to prove their most dangerous attacking player so far.

Former Manchester United defender Neville believes Mourinho and the Red Devils need to invest time in Martial to help the France international realise his undoubted talent at Old Trafford.

“Manchester United have to show patience with him because actually if you correct those running stats up to above 10km [per game] and you get him making those runs in between the full-back and the centre-back, because he can finish he will get up to 20 to 25 goals a season,” Neville told Monday Night Football on Sky Sports.

“United have to invest in him, which I’m sure they are doing, but that’s where the tension has been. Mourinho’s wanted a player who is ready now to win the league now. He is not ready now, there’s no doubt about that. However, the club are thinking this kid can actually be something special in the next two or three years. They’ve got to persevere with him but he’s also got to improve himself.

Martial scored in Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Newcastle United at Old Trafford before the international break.

The Red Devils forward netted two goals in a 2-2 draw with title rivals Chelsea FC at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League earlier this month.

Martial’s clinical finish against Everton was his fourth goal in the Premier League this season to leave him at the top of the club’s goal-scoring charts alongside Romelu Lukaku.
