Manchester United sent scouts to watch Benfica beat FC Porto at the weekend ahead of the January transfer window, according to a report in England.

The Manchester Evening News is reporting that the Red Devils had representatives sat in the stands to watch Benfica ease to a 1-0 win over FC Porto in the Portuguese top flight last weekend.

The same article adds that it is unclear who Manchester United were scouting given the number of departments that need strengthening in Jose Mourinho’s team.

According to the same article, Mourinho was thought to be keen on a centre-half, a winger and a striker in the summer and those positions still need reinforcement.

The Manchester media outlet reveal that Manchester United will have competition for Benfica’s top stars given scouts from Juventus, Liverpool FC, PSG, Bayern Munich and Arsenal were all present at the top of the table clash.

Mourinho was handed a reprieve last weekend after the Red Devils came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 against relegation candidates Newcastle United at Old Trafford.

Manchester United conceded two goals in the opening 10 minutes of the Premier League clash to heap pressure on Mourinho and suggest his time could be coming to an end given his side’s ragged first-half performance.

However, the Red Devils managed to regroup in the second half and Juan Mata halved the deficit before Anthony Martial levelled with 16 minutes left to play at the Theatre of Dreams.

Manchester United netted a dramatic winner thanks to Alexis Sanchez, who shrugged off a poor run of form to net a winner on the stroke of full-time to secure Mourinho some room to breathe at the 20-time English champions.

The Portuguese head coach has some much-needed respite during the international break before Manchester United make the trip to title challengers Chelsea FC in their next Premier League game at Stamford Bridge on Saturday 20 October.
