The Uruguay international has been getting used to life at the north London club after having signed for the Gunners from Italian side Sampdoria in the summer transfer window.
Torreira has been a regular fixture in the Arsenal team in recent weeks and he was named as the man of the match as the Gunners came from a goal down to claim a 1-1 draw with Liverpool FC in the Premier League on Saturday evening.
The 22-year-old holding midfielder has made one assist in 11 Premier League appearances so far this season, and he has started six times in the top flight so far.
Torreira has been impressive in the defensive midfield role for the north London side in recent games, and Manchester United legend Ferdinand feels that the Gunners could well have a star in the making in the form of the Uruguay international.
Speaking to BT Sport immediately after Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool FC, Ferdinand said: “The thing with Torreira is he knows that position.
“They [Arsenal] have brought in many players to play in that position over the years to almost make things tick. But they were all pretenders.
“Torreira is not someone who is going to split a defence with a pass. He’ll play the shorter passes to keep the momentum of the game going.
“He wants to get on the ball so he can make the other plays like Mesut Ozil. He can shield and that’s an important role in a team like this that wants to attack.”
Meanwhile, Arsenal legend Martin Keown added: “We used to use our midfielders as barriers. That’s what Torreira does. He could be the glue for this Arsenal team.”
Arsenal are fifth in the Premier League table after Tottenham’s 3-2 win over Wolves moved them a point ahead of their bitter north London rivals.
The Gunners will return to Europa League action on Thursday night when they host Sporting Lisbon at The Emirates in their next group game.
