The Sun is reporting that Arsenal boss Unai Emery is keen for the Gunners to try and bring the 22-year-old to The Emirates as the Spaniard aims to bolster his squad ahead of the second half of the season.
The same report says that Arsenal are willing to try and offload midfielder Mohamed Elneny to fund the move if necessary. Elneny has only made four appearances for Arsenal so far this season.
The article reveals that Fornals has a £17.8m release clause in his contract with the Spanish side – and Arsenal are prepared to pay that price.
The story goes on to claim that Emery is keen to see whether Fornals has what it takes to cut it in the Premier League as the north London side prepare for life without Aaron Ramsey.
Ramsey is out of contract in the summer and looks set to leave either in January or on a free transfer at the end of the season.
Fornals has been a regular fixture in the Villarreal side this season, scoring one goal and making one assist in 12 La Liga appearances.
He has also netted twice and made one assist in four Europa League appearances for Villarreal.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are currently preparing for their trip to Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon as they look to bounce back to winning ways after three straight draws in the top flight.
