The north London side have been getting used to life under new boss Unai Emery in recent months following his appointment as Arsene Wenger’s successor at The Emirates back in May.
The Spanish coach has been tasked with steering the Gunners back into the top four this season after they missed out on Champions League qualification for the last two years running.
Arsenal seem to have shown plenty of progress under Emery this season and they look set to at least challenge for a top-four finish this term.
However, Arsenal legend Smith has conceded that he wouldn’t be at all surprised if the Gunners moved to sign a new defender next year.
Smith is quoted as saying by the Evening Standard: “I like the look of [Rob] Holding. He has had a run in the side, which has been vital for his development and confidence.
“It can’t be easy playing alongside Shkodran Mustafi in central defence, because the German is very erratic, and it would be no surprise if Arsenal made it their priority to sign a centre-back sooner rather than later.”
Arsenal will return to Europa League action on Thursday night when they take on Vorskla away from home.
The north London side will then concentrate back on Premier League affairs, and their crunch home clash against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon at The Emirates.
Arsenal have not won the Premier League since their famous unbeaten triumph in 2003-04.
