Alan Shearer accuses Maurizio Sarri of ‘wasting’ Chelsea FC star’s talent
The Premier League legend wants to see N'Golo Kante back in his old Chelsea FC role
Alan Shearer has questioned why Maurizio Sarri is refusing to play N’Golo Kante in his best position in the Chelsea FC team.
The France international has established himself as the world’s best holding midfielder over the past three-and-a-half seasons.
Kante helped Leicester City to win the Premier League title in 2015-16 with some key performances alongside Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez.
Chelsea FC signed the defensive midfielder in a £34m deal from Leicester and Kante won successive Premier League titles as the Blues finished top of the table in Antonio Conte’s first season.
The 27-year-old won the World Cup with France in the summer after Didier Deschamps’ side were 4-2 winners against Croatia in the World Cup final in Russia.
However, Sarri’s appointment as manager in July prompted the arrival of Italy international Jorginho in a £57m deal to help the Italian boss implement his style at Stamford Bridge.
Jorginho has been used in a holding role in the Chelsea FC team, resulting in Kante being pushed further up the pitch to play in a more advanced position in Sarri’s team.
Chelsea FC’s defence was exposed during their 3-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on Saturday to leave the Blues eight points behind leaders Manchester City.
Former Newcastle striker Shearer was critical of Sarri for starting Jorginho ahead of Kante in a holding role.
“Why Maurizio Sarri is not playing N’Golo Kante in front of his back four baffles me,” Shearer told The Sun.
“Without the little French dynamo in that hole, tidying up, tracking runners, it leaves David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger massively exposed – as Spurs showed to such devastating effect on Saturday night.
“Leicester City won the league with Wes Morgan and Robert Huth as their centre-half pairing. Decent defenders but neither are particularly quick. But their deficiencies were expertly covered up by Kante – the best defensive midfielder in the world bar none. Jorginho is not in the same class.
“Kante is wasted playing where he did against Spurs, higher up the park and to the right. He is not an attacking midfielder. I know Sarri worked with Jorginho at Napoli and trusts him in that holding position but he had a poor night at Wembley.”
