Paul Merson predicts where Liverpool FC, Chelsea FC will finish in title race
The Arsenal legend believes Manchester City will beat Liverpool FC and Chelsea FC to the Premier League title
Paul Merson believes Manchester City will beat Liverpool FC and Chelsea FC to the Premier League title this season.
The Citizens are looking to retain the Premier League crown for the first time in their history after Roberto Mancini led the Eastlands outfit to the English top flight in 2012.
Pep Guardiola has constructed arguably the greatest side in Premier League history and the Citizens saw a number of records tumble last season after Manchester City finished with 100 points.
The defending champions have made a strong start to the current campaign but their title rivals have all strengthened and put together impressive runs of their own.
Liverpool FC were initially talked up as Manchester City’s biggest challengers and the Reds have delivered in the opening months of the season after keeping pace with Guardiola’s side.
Jurgen Klopp’s men are level on points with Manchester City at the top of the table after eight victories and two stalemates, dropping points against Chelsea FC and the Citizens.
The Blues have drawn three times in the Premier League in an otherwise perfect start to life under Maurizio Sarri following his appointment in the summer.
Even Arsenal (four) and Tottenham (five) are just a few points adrift of the leading pack despite dealing with a number of challenges in the opening months of the campaign.
Asked to predict his top six in an interview with Sky Sports, former Arsenal legend Merson tipped Manchester City to win the Premier League title in successive seasons.
“Manchester City are just a bit too good for Liverpool, and Chelsea are very reliant on Hazard. Tottenham might not have signed anyone in the summer, but they’ve only got to get into the top four and before Monday night it was their best start to a season,” Merson said.
The former Gunners star ruled out Arsenal snagging the final top four spot in Unai Emery’s first season despite their impressive eight-game unbeaten run.
Merson added: “Arsenal have too much to do to bridge the gap, their defence is still the same as it was under Arsene Wenger in terms of giving away chances, and Manchester United are dropping too many points and not looking convincing at the minute.”
Arsenal will take on Liverpool FC at The Emirates in the Premier League on Saturday evening in what will be a clear indication of their respective ambitions for the top flight campaign.
