Michael Owen pinpoints Liverpool FC’s biggest strength under Jurgen Klopp
The Liverpool FC legend has been impressed with how Jurgen Klopp has improved his defence this season
Michael Owen believes Liverpool FC’s biggest strength is their defence under Jurgen Klopp.
The Reds suffered a disappointing 2-1 loss to Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Liverpool FC have struggled in Europe but Klopp’s side have excelled in the Premier League so far this season.
The Merseyside outfit have only conceded five times in 13 games in the English top flight, with summer signing Alisson Becker keeping eight clean sheets.
Liverpool FC are on course to concede around only 15 goals throughout the entire season, which would be a marked improvement on previous campaigns under Brendan Rodgers and Klopp.
Virgil van Dijk arrived in a club record deal in the January transfer window and the Netherlands international has given the Reds more defensive stability.
Alisson, who moved to Liverpool FC from AS Roma in a £67m deal in the summer, has provided a calming presence in goal after succeeding Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius in the role.
Liverpool FC scored 84 times in 38 games as Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane combined to great effect.
The trio haven’t produced as many fluid performances in the current campaign despite contributing 16 goals.
Former Liverpool FC striker Owen believes Klopp’s defence has become the strongest part of the Reds team.
“Dejan Lovren is a top player himself,” Owen told BT Sport.
“Liverpool now, they’re leaving Trent Alexander-Arnold out and he’s a fabulous player himself. So I think they’ve got so many options now at the back.
“Of course, Jurgen Klopp was looking at what he was playing against [PSG] and trying to nullify a fantastic attack. And Liverpool’s defence, I never thought I’d say it, is actually their biggest strength nowadays and this season.
“So there’s no question that Jurgen Klopp’s been respectful, leaving Trent probably for the weekend [against Everton].”
Liverpool FC will take on Everton in the Premier League on Sunday.
