Virgil van Dijk hints he wants Liverpool FC to sign 19-year-old
The Liverpool FC defender opens up about exciting Netherland talent Matthijis de Ligt
Virgil van Dijk has dropped a big hint that he would like Liverpool FC to sign Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt.
The 19-year-old has emerged as a promising talent in European football after De Ligt broke through the ranks at Ajax over the couple of seasons.
De Ligt’s progress has been such that the teenager is already a regular in the Netherlands national team to highlight his bright future.
The Ajax starlet has already established himself as Van Dijk’s partner at centre-half for Ronald Koeman’s side.
According to Metro, Premier League champions Manchester City and La Liga title holders FC Barcelona are interested in the Ajax teenager.
Quizzed about De Ligt’s progress at both club and international level, Van Dijk told De Telegraaf as quoted by Metro:
“He is already very far, especially at that age.
“A good defender, good boy, calm, knows what he wants and hopefully he makes the right choice in his next step.”
When pressed about whether the 19-year-old’s next step could be a move to Liverpool FC, Van Dijk added:
“He will be on the list, because they have enough scouts at the club.”
When it was put to Van Dijk that he could be in a better position to rate De Ligt than Liverpool FC scouts, the talismanic defender concluded:
“No, but if they need my opinion at Liverpool, I will give it.”
While De Ligt would be an exciting prospective signing for Jurgen Klopp’s side, his arrival could stunt the growth of Joe Gomez.
The England international has established a promising partnership with Van Dijk in the 2018-19 Premier League season so far.
Liverpool FC spent a world record fee for a defender to land the Netherlands international in a £75m deal from Southampton in the January transfer window.
