Chris Sutton has accused Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho of “behaving like a big baby”.

The Red Devils suffered a chastening 3-1 loss to Premier League leaders Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday evening thanks to goals from David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Ilkay Gundogan.

Manchester United adopted a defensive approach to the Manchester derby in an attempt to contain the defending champions but Mourinho’s side were unable to cope with Manchester City’s attacking style.

Manchester City warmed up for the derby clash with a 6-1 victory over Southampton in the Premier League at the end of October before a 6-0 win over Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.

Mourinho quipped that the Citizens had benefited from playing what were effectively “friendly” games in the build up to the derby clash, while Manchester United came from behind to battle to a 2-1 win over Juventus in Turin.

Former Chelsea FC striker Sutton wasn’t impressed with Mourinho’s remarks in the wake of the Manchester derby and described the Portuguese head coach as a “big baby”.

“United were outclassed,” Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live. “It was like watching Manchester versus Manchester reserves.

“There is an enormous gap between them and City, and things aren’t going to change unless they change the manager.

“What was most galling for me were Mourinho’s comments after the game – kicking off, behaving like a big baby. When is it going to stop?”

Manchester United are in eighth place in the Premier League table and 12 points behind defending champions Manchester City after 12 games.

The Red Devils have already conceded 21 goals in 12 games in the Premier League this season to raise big questions about Mourinho’s defence.

Manchester United have the international break to recoup from their humiliating derby loss before the Red Devils take on Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Saturday 24 November.

The 20-time English champions haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013, with Mourinho ruling out a title challenge in the current campaign following their derby loss.
