Paul Scholes has claimed that Jose Mourinho “looks like a lonely man” at Manchester United.

The Portuguese head coach has endured a difficult start to the Premier League season after dropping points for the seventh time in the English top flight this term.

Manchester United were held to a goalless draw with relegation candidates Crystal Palace last weekend to extend their winless run to two games in the Premier League.

The Red Devils have lost to Brighton, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Manchester City in the Premier League, while Juventus were 1-0 winners at Old Trafford.

However, Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini netted an added-time winner to secure a 1-0 victory over Swiss side Young Boys in the Champions League last weekend.

Manchester United’s last-gasp goal secured their spot in the knockout stage of the competition alongside their bitter rivals Manchester City.

Former England international Scholes believes Mourinho is running out of allies at Old Trafford after a challenging start to the 2018-19 season.

“He seems like a lonely man at the minute doesn’t he?” Scholes told BT Sport.

“He seems the man stuck in the middle of everything. He’s fallen out with the people who are trying to buy players for him, he’s having a pop at his players.

“He just seems a little bit alone in the middle of it all at the minute. And the way his team is playing it seems that way as well.”

Manchester United will return to Premier League action on Saturday with a trip to Southampton.

The Red Devils are in seventh place in the table and 14 points adrift of leaders Manchester City.

Mourinho’s side are facing a battle to secure a top-four spot given Chelsea FC are eight points ahead of Manchester United.
