The Daily Mail is reporting that the Red Devils have opened contract talks with the England defender about extending his current deal beyond the summer.
The Red Devils have begun discussions with the defender despite the fact that they have the option to trigger a one-year extension to his current deal at Old Trafford.
The same story reports that Smalling currently earns around £80,000 a week, but he is looking for an increase to about £120,000 a week as he approaches the latter stages of his career.
The 29-year-old has scored one goal in 10 Premier League appearances this season and he has been a regular fixture in Jose Mourinho’s first team, making 14 appearances in all competitions so far.
However, despite Manchester United having seemingly opened talks with Smalling, the same report says that the defender’s future at the club is uncertain.
That’s because Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho is still apparently keen to sign a new central defender to add to his squad in the January transfer window after having failed to do so in the summer.
Smalling will be hoping to feature when Manchester United will take on Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
