Manchester United looked as though they were heading for another Champions League defeat by the Italian side after Cristiano Ronaldo put the Serie A team ahead in the 65th minute in Turin.
However, Juan Mata’s late free-kick and Alex Sandro’s own goal handed Manchester United a dramatic late victory and allowed them to claim all three points to keep their hopes of qualifying for the last 16 alive.
The victory will serve as a welcome warm-up to Manchester United’s derby showdown against Manchester City at The Etihad on Sunday afternoon in the Premier League.
Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand was very impressed by the performances of a number of Red Devils stars, and he paid particular praise to Martial after the final whistle on Wednesday night.
Speaking to BT Sport after Wednesday’s win, Ferdinand said: “[The win was] exactly what we wanted, going into the derby at the weekend as well, what a fantastic result.
“Confidence I’m sure will be on the rise. What a difficult place to go, this stadium, they’ve made it a fortress over the last couple of years.
“The substitutions, Jose’s got to take huge credit. Mata coming on got the goal, [Marouane] Fellaini causing havoc in there as well.
“I think that the substitutes played a really vital part in the ending of this match.
“But Martial I think deserves special mention, I thought he was Man United’s best player on the day.”
Manchester United will now switch their focus back to Premier League affairs and their crunch clash at Manchester City on Sunday.
A win for the Red Devils would move them six points behind Pep Guardiola’s men heading into the final international break of the season.
