The 28-year-old shot-stopper is widely regarded as one of the world’s top goalkeepers and he has been earning plenty of praise for his strong appearances in recent seasons.
De Gea’s current contract at Old Trafford is due to expire this summer, but the Red Devils are thought to have the option to trigger a one-year extension.
However, if the goalkeeper does not want to commit to a new contract, Manchester United could still risk losing De Gea on a free transfer in 2020 even if they do trigger the extension.
Now, Manchester United manager Mourinho has given his clearest indication yet that the Spain international will sign a new deal with the Red Devils.
Speaking at his post-match news conference on Tuesday night after Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Young Boys, Mourinho said: “He’s a world-class player.
“He’s the best goalkeeper in the world and we need the best goalkeeper in the world and you need also some other players who are the best in the world.
“In this is case, we have the best goalkeeper in the world and I know that he wants to stay.
“I know that his agent is happy to do what the player wants and I also know that the board wants him to stay, and hopefully, sooner or later, they arrive into a good conclusion.”
Manchester United will now turn their attentions back towards Premier League affairs and their trip to Southampton on Saturday evening.
The Red Devils’ win over Young Boys on Tuesday night confirmed their place in the last 16 of the Champions League.
