The Uruguay international scored his first north London derby goal in Sunday’s 4-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon.
Torreira started in the heart of midfield alongside Switzerland international Granit Xhaka in the six-goal thriller.
The summer signing completed 90 per cent of his attempted passes and made three successful tackles during their vital win.
The 22-year-old provided much-needed steel in the Arsenal midfield to help Unai Emery’s side force Tottenham back in the first half.
Torreira’s never-say-die attitude has already won the South American midfielder lots of plaudits in the opening third of the season.
Arsenal have conceded nine times in 873 minutes with Torreira in the team but Emery’s side have let in nine goals in 297 minutes when the summer signing isn’t on the pitch.
Former Manchester United defender Neville underlined Torreira’s impact on the Arsenal team.
“Lucas Torreira in midfield sets the tone,” Neville told Sky Sports. “He doesn’t leave them anywhere else to go.
“When you see him busying around like a terrier, the rest have to respond to it and thrive off it.
“It just felt like they had some nastiness about them today. Even when Eric Dier scored they went over and had a scrap with them over that. I like that. Arsenal teams haven’t had a fight in them for years!
“That’s what you expected from Arsenal in the past. It’s a great football club, but it was a shock for me today to see an Arsenal team play in such a competitive and combative style.”
Arsenal signed Torreira in a £26m deal from Serie A side Sampdoria in the 2018 summer transfer window.
The Uruguay international has scored one goal and has made one assist in 14 games in the Premier League.
The summer signing has already picked up three bookings after Torreira was cautioned during the derby clash.
Arsenal supporters will be hoping the no-nonsense midfielder can help the Gunners to secure a positive result against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
