Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Sevilla midfielder Ever Banega, according to reports in Spain
Arsenal are closing in on the January signing of Sevilla midfielder Ever Banega after his agent flew to London to discuss a move, according to reports in Spain.
Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, as quoted by The Sun, is reporting that the Gunners are keen to bring in the 30-year-old, who has previously worked with Unai Emery at Sevilla and Valencia.
According to the same report, Emery is keen to bring in an experienced midfielder as he looks to strengthen his squad in the mid-season transfer window – and Banega fits the bill.
The same article says that Banega has an £18m release clause in his Sevilla contract and Arsenal are prepared to trigger it.
The story also claims that Banega’s new agent spent Christmas in London to hold talks with Arsenal chiefs about a move to The Emirates in the new year.
Banega could be seen as a replacement for Aaron Ramsey, who is out of contract in the summer and has been widely tipped to leave Arsenal at the end of the season.
The midfielder has scored three goals and made two assists in 16 La Liga games so far this term.
Meanwhile, Arsenal will return to Premier League action on new year’s day when they take on Fulham at The Emirates.
The north London side are aiming to try and break back into the top four this season after they finished sixth last term in Arsene Wenger’s final campaign in charge.
