Gianfranco Zola discusses Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s improvement at Chelsea FC
The Chelsea FC assistant manager highlights Ruben Loftus-Cheek's improvement at Stamford Bridge this season
Gianfranco Zola has praised Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s improvement since Maurizio Sarri’s appointment in the summer.
The England international returned to Chelsea FC at the start of the season following a stint on loan at Crystal Palace last term.
The Blues star has found his first-team opportunities limited following the arrival of Napoli midfielder Jorginho and Real Madrid star Mateo Kovavic in the summer.
Sarri has made Jorginho a regular in the heart of Chelsea FC’s midfielder, while Kovacic has made a contribution whether it is starting games or from the bench.
Loftus-Cheek, though, has seized his chance to shine when Sarri has given the English midfielder a prove that he is worthy of a starting spot.
The 22-year-old has scored against Burnley, Fulham and Wolves in the Premier League, despite starting just one game and making seven appearances from the bench.
Loftus-Cheek netted his first Chelsea FC hat-trick in a 3-0 win against BATE Borisov in the Europa League back in October to make a claim for a starting spot.
Chelsea FC assistant manager Zola has been impressed with Loftus-Cheek’s performances since his return to the west London side in the summer.
“I was impressed with him,” Zola told a Chelsea FC news conference last week after the Blues’ League Cup win over Bournemouth.
“He has done very well as one of the wide players, but he showed a lot of application and sacrifice when he played as a midfielder.
“He was getting tired towards the end but he was still disciplined and gave the team a hand. He has come far since the beginning of the season.
“He has improved in many ways, and I’m pleased because he is a good boy and he works very hard on his game.”
Loftus-Cheek has netted two goals and has made three assists in 24 games in the Premier League in the 2017-18 season during his loan spell at Crystal Palace.
