Liverpool FC appeared to be heading towards a goalless draw with the Toffees to lose further ground on leaders Manchester City.
However, Jurgen Klopp opted to bring on Origi for Roberto Firmino in the closing stages of the match in a move of desperation given that the Belgian forward has barely featured this term.
And Origi rewarded his manager’s gamble with the winner deep in injury time to secure a 1-0 victory over Everton and keep Liverpool FC within two points of leaders Manchester City.
Understandably, Anfield erupted with joy after the winner, and former Liverpool FC captain Thompson took to Twitter celebrate a huge victory.
Thompson wrote on Twitter: “That’s why Anfield is such a magical place YNWA.”
Former Liverpool FC goalkeeper Pepe Reina was thrilled with Origi’s winner, too.
Reina posted: “Get iiiiiiin!!!”
Liverpool FC are looking to win their first Premier League title, having finished in second place in 2002, 2009 and 2014.
However, the Merseyside outfit do have a manager with title-winning pedigree given Klopp led Borussia Dortmund to successive titles in 2010 and 2011.
Klopp’s men finished in fourth place and 25 points behind defending champions Manchester City last season, but the Reds managed to secure a point in a goalless draw in October.
The Reds will make the trip to the Etihad Stadium on New Year’s Day.
