Stan Collymore praised Liverpool FC for their performance in a comprehensive 4-0 win against Newcastle United at Anfield on Boxing Day.

The Reds were looking to secure a fifth successive Premier League victory to maintain their lead at the top of the table.

Dejan Lovren broke the deadlock in the first half with a sublime finish to end Newcastle’s resistance on Merseyside.

Reigning PFA player of the year Mohamed Salah doubled the home side’s lead from the penalty spot to score his 13th Premier League goal of the season.

Switzerland playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri made it 3-0 before Fabinho came off the bench to guide a header into the net to seal an emphatic win.

Liverpool FC moved seven points ahead of defending Premier League champions Manchester City thanks to their 4-0 victory over the Magpies.

Former Reds striker Collymore lavished praise on Liverpool FC following their impressive Boxing Day win.

Collymore wrote on Twitter: “Liverpool are simply irresistible at the moment.

A joy to watch. Befitting of the ethos ingrained over 50 plus years.

Wonderful, Reds, wonderful 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽”

The ex-England international had predicted in the first half that the Reds would run up the score.

Collymore posted on social media: “Liverpool in total control at Anfield. Could be 2 or 3 already. Visitors reliant on sporadic counter attacks.

Diame has been exceptional at snuffing out danger 10 yards outside of his box. 6 or 7 good intercepted already.
#LIVNEW”

Liverpool FC are looking to win the Premier League title for the first time in their history after finishing in second place in 2002, 2009 and 2014.

The Merseyside outfit haven’t won a trophy under current boss Jurgen Klopp despite reaching three cups finals in the Europa League, the League Cup and the Champions League.

Liverpool FC will take on Arsenal in their next Premier League game at Anfield on Saturday.
